Research conducted over the past decade demonstrates that students face a number of emotional problems and adjustment difficulties during their academic lives that they often fail to address and resolve. People are more aware of the importance of maintaining physical health and preventing diseases when it comes to physical health, while mental health care is often neglected.
The Psychological Counseling Office has conducted various research on the problems and difficulties students of the University of Rijeka face, as well as their needs. Findings indicate that students most often seek help due to the following problems:
learning difficulties (problems with procrastination, concentration and memory, inadequate habits and/or learning strategies...)
Almost all (97%) students experience at least some of the following academic problems while studying:

inefficient time management regarding studying and entertainment
-
difficulties with taking exams,
-
learning difficulties,
-
feelings of inefficient studying,
-
dissatisfaction with the chosen study program,
-
doubts regarding one's choice of faculty,
-
thoughts of leaving higher education,
-
fear of failure during their study,
-
uncertainty regarding their future career, etc.
poor time management
-
inefficient time management regarding studying and entertainment
-
not completing tasks on schedule,
-
lack of time for desired activities
-
constant feelings of tiredness and exhaustion,
-
"if only the day had more hours",
-
difficulties in setting priorities,
-
giving up activities due to lack of time.
unsatisfactory relationships with others
71% of students report some form of relationship problems with other people:
-
feelings of distrust in others,
-
disagreements and conflicts with parents,
-
problems in intimate relationships
-
poor communication with professors,
-
feelings of misunderstanding and non-acceptance by the environment,
-
problems in relationships with friends/roommates.

Symptoms of depression may include:

intense, lasting feeling of sadness, dissatisfaction and feeling low,
-
gloomy mood,
-
bursts of "dark" thoughts,
-
unease about the future, hopelessness,
-
inability to enjoy previously pleasant things or activities,
-
loneliness, feelings of non-belonging and being misunderstood by others,
-
feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, guilt,
-
difficulties in making important decisions,
-
desire to die or fantasizing about suicide.

Symptoms of anxiety may include:

excessive fear of certain things, places or events,
-
panic attacks (very intense fear associated with a severe physical reaction),

constant, excessive concern about various things,
-
exam anxiety,
-
constant physical tension, inability to relax.
low self-esteem, personal insecurity
66% of students at some point in their academic lives feel dissatisfied with themselves or experience some of the following manifestations of low self-esteem:
-
dissatisfaction with one's own physical appearance,
-
dissatisfaction with oneself,
-
excessive self-criticism,
-
feelings of inferiority.
